
Picking the Right Wattage for Your Mirror Bathroom Heater
Here is the thing about mirror infrared heaters: they don’t bother warming up the air. Instead, they beam heat directly onto you. It’s the difference between waiting for a room to warm up and stepping into a beam of sunlight on a cold morning. But if you get the wattage wrong, you’re either shivering or feeling like you’re standing under a heat lamp at a buffet.
Getting the Power Right
Most of these lamps run anywhere from 250W to 1200W. The trick is matching that power to your actual space. If you’ve got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), keep it simple. A single 250W to 400W lamp is plenty. Go any higher and you’ll end up with “hotspots”—those annoying patches where it feels way too hot in one spot and chilly everywhere else. Plus, you’re just wasting electricity. For your main bathroom (roughly 6m² to 12m²), you’ll want something in the 600W to 1000W range. But don’t just jam all that power into one bulb. We usually split the load across two or three lamps. It spreads the warmth around the room much better. Better yet, it keeps the quartz glass from overheating, which means your lamps will actually last longer.
How the “Mirror” Part Actually Works
You’ll notice a reflective coating on the quartz glass. That’s not for looks. It basically acts like a mirror for heat, bouncing the radiation forward and down toward you instead of letting it leak up into your ceiling. Inside, we use halogen gas to protect the filament. This lets the lamp run hotter without burning out. The result? It’s fast. Really fast. You hit the switch, and you feel the heat in seconds.
A Few Things to Watch Out For
Before you install these, check your wiring. High-wattage lamps pull a lot of current. If your wires are too thin, you’ll get a voltage drop, and your heater will feel weak. It’s frustrating and a waste of a good lamp. And a quick word of caution on ceiling height. High-wattage lamps are powerful. If your ceiling is too low, that “instant warmth” can feel a bit searing. If you’re using anything over 600W, try to keep at least 2.2 meters of clearance. It gives the heat a chance to spread out before it hits your skin, making the experience feel cozy rather than intense.
