
Picking the Right Replacement IR Heaters for Your Commercial Oven
Let’s be honest: OEM lamps for imported ovens are getting ridiculously expensive. When those bills start piling up, it’s tempting to just grab any “drop-in” replacement that looks the right size. But here’s the thing. It’s not just about the length. If you ignore the electrical load or the way the heat actually hits the food, you’re either going to fry your heater or end up with undercooked product. Neither is a great look. The electrical side of things First, check your wattage and voltage. Seriously. This is where most people mess up, and it’s the fastest way to kill a lamp. If you plug a low-voltage tube into a high-voltage circuit? Pop. Gone. On the flip side, if you under-power it, you’ll never hit your target temperature. We build these tubes to handle specific power densities. High-wattage circular heaters cram a lot of heat into a tiny space, which puts a real strain on your oven’s wiring. Just double-check that your contactors and wires can actually handle that kind of draw before you flip the switch. Quartz and the “fit” Most of these heaters use high-purity quartz glass because it can take the thermal shock without cracking. We also fill them with halogen gas. Without that, the tungsten just evaporates and the tube turns black. And please, look at the ends. Whether you’re dealing with R7s or SK15 connectors, the fit has to be tight. A loose connection creates an arc—and that’s how you melt a socket. If your OEM used some weird, proprietary clip, you’ll probably need a custom end-cap to make sure the lamp actually seats right. The cost vs. performance trade-off You can definitely find cheaper alternatives without breaking the laws of physics, but there are a few catches. Generic replacements often skip the special coatings you find on high-end OEM tubes. This changes the “flavor” of the heat, shifting it from shortwave to medium-wave IR. You might notice your food doesn’t brown quite the same way. It’s not a deal-breaker, but you’ll likely need to mess with your timer settings to get that perfect finish again.
