
Picking the Right Far Infrared Tubes for Your Oven
Let’s be honest: OEM heating tubes for imported convection ovens are ridiculously expensive. When one pops, you don’t want to spend a small fortune just to get your kitchen or line running again. You need a replacement that fits perfectly and hits the same temperatures without messing up your oven’s settings. Most of these high-end systems use quartz-halogen far-infrared (FIR) tubes. Just a heads-up—these aren’t your average light bulbs. They’re precision tools designed to move heat.
Get the Voltage and Wattage Right
You can’t just eyeball the length of the tube and call it a day. If your oven runs on 230V and you slide in a 110V tube, it’s going to blow out almost instantly. On the flip side, putting a higher voltage tube into a lower voltage circuit means you’ll lose a ton of heat. You’ll be wondering why your food isn’t searing. I always look at the wattage-per-centimeter. When you pack more wattage into a shorter space, you get a concentrated blast of heat. It’s great for that quick surface sear, but it puts a lot more stress on the quartz glass.
Materials and the “Fit”
Most of these replacements use high-purity quartz because it can handle the sudden jump in temperature without shattering. Some even have gold coatings to push the heat deeper into whatever you’re cooking. But here is the part people miss:the connectors. Whether you’re dealing with an R7s or an SK15, the fit has to be snug. If it’s loose, you get “arc points”—basically tiny sparks. Those sparks will melt your socket and kill your brand-new tube before you even get a chance to use it.
The Catch with High-Density Heat
High-wattage FIR tubes get you up to temperature fast. But they’re fragile. If your staff touches the glass with their bare hands, the oils from their skin create invisible hotspots. Once the oven heats up, those spots can cause the glass to crack. It’s a pain, but it’s avoidable. Just wipe the tubes down with some isopropyl alcohol before you wire them in. And one last thing: keep an eye on your airflow. If your convection fans decide to quit, these tubes will overheat and blow your fuse in no time. Keep the air moving, and you’ll be fine.
