
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters from Shorting Out
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. Between the constant steam and the occasional direct splash from the shower, it’s a nightmare for electronics. Use a standard heater in there, and you’re basically asking for a short circuit—or worse. You really need an IP65-rated enclosure. It’s the only way to keep the guts of the machine dry and make sure nobody gets a shock while they’re trying to warm up. The deal with IP65 When you see “IP65,” it just means the unit is dust-tight and can handle water jets hitting it from any angle. We make this happen by using reinforced glass and high-temp silicone gaskets to seal the housing. Here’s why that matters: steam is sneaky. If it leaks into the housing, it creates a little bridge of moisture between the live wire and the chassis. That bridge is a shortcut for electricity to go where it shouldn’t. The seal stops that from ever happening. Getting the insulation right To stop any “leakage” of current, we don’t mess around. We use ceramic terminal blocks and double-insulated cabling. Ceramic is great because it doesn’t warp or degrade even when the lamp is cranking out massive amounts of heat. And the wiring? We use fluoropolymer jackets. They’re tough. They won’t melt or crack over time, which is exactly what you want when things get hot. One more thing:**ground the chassis.**Always. If something does go wrong inside, a grounded metal shell makes sure the breaker trips instantly instead of turning the outside of the heater into a live wire. The trade-offs There is a catch, though. When you seal a heater tight enough to keep water out, you’re also trapping heat inside. It can’t breathe as easily from the back. Because of that, give your mounting brackets some breathing room. Don’t cram them against a wall or ceiling; leave a gap so the housing doesn’t overheat. And for total peace of mind? Wire it into a GFCI. It’s that extra safety net that handles the humidity of a shower environment without making things dangerous.
